ABBY JOHNSON-RUSCANSKY - STYLE FILES

The Mainers Team January 29, 2018

Throughout my life, my own personal style has always been important to me. My earliest memory of my first fashion faux pas was when my mom was dressing me at the age of 5 or 6 and she was trying to get me to wear stirrup pants (all the rage in the 90’s). I felt so uncomfortable in them, and I fought with her to change. To this day, I always want to feel comfortable in what I am wearing, so I search long and hard to put together my outfits based first on how it fits, how I feel and if it’s tasteful. My fashion influences range from NYC street to French fashion and I like to combine these into my own style.

Living in Maine, my fashion choices are often hindered by weather, so everything really “depends”. My absolute must haves for fall and winter are turtlenecks, my favorite LL Bean cotton camping socks and leggings and in spring / summer I stay true to thin sweaters and light layers. Two of my favorite locally owned shops are Annie-Made by Anne Meub and Amie Artisans by Meredith Brockington. Both source materials ethically and sell products that are made, owned and maintained by women. Another in-town favorite of mine is Judith, a contemporary shop selling some of my favorite brands such as Apiece Apart, Rachel Comey and Jesse Kamm. I also browse for inspiration to find more affordable and similar pieces in places like Portland Flea-for-All and Find.

I admire an aesthetic that can speak for itself. In a word, I think mine could be summarized by “neutral”, both in tonality and androgyny. I love feminine cuts and accessories, but I also tend t accentuate my figure less and layer more. That being said, my fashion influences often shift and evolve, along with my own moods and feelings. I don’t necessarily have a favorite outfit or a firm style icon, but when I am not intentionally making fashion choices I am still picking staples and pinning ideas – often leading to influence in my visual work as a photographer.
